3. Modem (MOdulator/DEModulator)

allows the computer's digital information to be carried as sound over the telephone network. For example, a home user may use a modem to dial into a server computer owned by an ISP. Once connected to the service provider, the modem user will be able to access email on network servers, WWW documents, and other services albeit at a slower speed. This is because of the limitations of data transmission speeds over the telephone lines.
